GROWING FOOD-CHEMICAL MANUFACTURER EXPANDS TO TACOMA, WA
BHS Specialty Chemical Products Announces New Manufacturing Site, Doubles Capacity

TACOMA, Washington, Nov. 1, 2012 – As of October 1, 2012, BHS Specialty Chemical Products will expand the scope of its food-safe chemical manufacturing operations. To serve the growing needs of the food grade manufacturing industry, the company is developing a new production and distribution facility in Tacoma, Washington.

The new site, is over twice the size of the current BHS manufacturing facility in
Nampa, Idaho, will more than double the company’s production capacity, and will expand its reach in the Northwest and worldwide, said BHS Chairman & CEO Phil Johnson. “BHS has acquired manufacturing space at Olin Chlor Alkali Products’ Tacoma Plant.  This strategic site will allow BHS access to integrated, economical, chlor alkali products produced by Olin.”

The BHS facility will be located on Thorne Road just east of Tacoma in the city’s
Tideflats industrial area. With easy access to the Seattle & Tacoma ports, this will be an international gateway to the Pacific Rim and the world.

BHS Specialty Chemical Products is a unique SQF-Certified company that specializes in an array of chemicals created for the food industry, including a complete offering of food-safe plant sanitation products as well as food ingredients. With a focus on the needs of food manufacturing plants, the company will have increased ability to facilitate the growth of a variety of industry segments, including everything from potato products to fruits, vegetables, seafood and sugar.

BHS is also the world’s largest producer of soda ash briquettes used in aluminum smelting operations, as well as in neutralization for the high-sulfur coal industry. BHS’s strong standing as the leading provider in soda ash makes them the largest independent marketer of powdered soda ash in North America.

Production at the Tacoma location will start as a phased approach; product rollouts will begin before the end of the year. Ultimately, the new facility will produce all products that are manufactured at the company’s home base in Nampa, Idaho, thereby doubling the company’s total output. Including warehousing locations, this will be the fourth facility for BHS, which provides service from coast to coast. Other locations include Fort Lupton, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah. A total of 75 million pounds of product annually is projected for the Tacoma facility.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CUTTING EDGE MEASURE FOR FOOD-CHEMICAL SUPPLIER
Company Answers the Call of Safety, Gets SQF Certification

NAMPA, Idaho, June 1, 2012 – When industry leaders founded the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), it was a bold step toward self-regulated industry reform. Now, a unique company that specializes in chemicals for the food industry, BHS Specialty Chemical Products, is embracing that movement – and taking it in a whole new direction.

When BHS was recently awarded the food-safety recognition of SQF Certification, a standard backed by GSFI, it may have raised attention among others in the industry. After all, few of their fellow food-grade chemical distributors have followed suit. According to Phil Johnson, BHS Chairman and CEO, this measure of safety certification is “far from the norm” for his industry. “There aren’t many chemical suppliers who have gone to this extent. We thought we were ahead of our time, but new regulations and increased standards put us just in time.” BHS is now among a minority of manufacturers, estimated at less than 5%, who are SQF 2000 Level II Certified for food-grade ingredient manufacturing, sanitation and distribution.

First, a bit of background: The GSFI was not created to regulate the food industry, it was created to help the industry regulate itself. This non-profit entity, formed in 2000, was designed to create a global standard for food safety methodologies, and to prevent redundant (and expensive) food safety audits. Third-party organizations would be encouraged to develop safety-standard programs to meet GFSI benchmarks; once officially recognized by the GFSI, these third-party entities would be allowed to conduct safety audits of companies in the food industry, granting certification to those that pass muster.

The Safe Quality Food Program (SQF) is one such standard. According to the SQF Institute, theirs is the only certification program outside Europe recognized by the GFSI, the standards of which have been embraced by several major U.S. food outlets including Target, Costco and Safeway. It is a comprehensive risk-based food safety program designed to reduce the incidence of unsafe food reaching the marketplace.

The SQF Institute provides two distinctions, based on the type of food supplier that is being certified: Primary producers, such as farmers, may be certified as SQF 1000. Manufacturers and distributors like BHS can earn the SQF 2000 Level II certification. And although participation in such safety programs is 100% voluntary, many of the big-name food outlets now require their vendors to be certified by some type of GFSI-recognized program. Based on this, it’s quite possible that participation will eventually become a requirement for companies throughout the food industry, both in the U.S. and around the world.

However, it’s not easy or inexpensive to earn certification. For many companies, it means extensive modifications to manufacturing processes or to factory infrastructures. So why would a company like BHS be so quick to jump on the bandwagon? It’s just one more way that they are leading the future of the industry. From their unique business model, which embraces all aspects of the business from manufacturing to delivery, to their industry-changing developments, such as technology that will allow for real-time digital analysis of chemical samples, it’s all part of a strategy that distinguishes BHS from competitors. “We’re moving the cheese,” Johnson says with a grin.
For now, food manufacturers who intend to seek some type of GFSI-recognized certification would do well to source the food-grade ingredients, sanitizers and other chemical products they need from a certified source such as BHS. That’s because SQF standards encourage the flow of quality and safety both upstream and down; manufacturers who use certified suppliers will have an easier process of becoming certified themselves.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

FOOD-CHEMICAL SUPPLIER ENTERS EXCLUSIVE GROUP
BHS Specialty Chemical Joins 5% of Industry with SQF Certification

NAMPA, Idaho, May. 1, 2012 – When BHS Specialty Chemical, headquartered in Nampa, Idaho, was officially granted SQF certification on April 3, 2012, the company became one of a select group. BHS is now among a minority of manufacturers, estimated at less than 5%, who are SQF 2000 Level II Certified for food-grade ingredient manufacturing, sanitation and distribution.

Phil Johnson, BHS Chairman and CEO, said this measure of safety certification is unusual in this area of the food industry. “There aren’t many chemical suppliers who have gone to this extent.”

The company determined to undertake the certification process some 18 months before the certification date, knowing that earning SQF certification would be a significant achievement. “For many manufacturers or distributors of chemical food products, this certification would be difficult for them to earn,” noted Johnson. Representing a comprehensive audit of food-safety practices, safety plans and plant infrastructure, the prospect of SQF certification can be daunting to companies, both small and large.

Joining Johnson in spearheading this effort were BHS Quality & Regulatory Manager Heather Edwards and R&D Manager Ben Parker. “As a team, we agreed that this was the right move to make,” said Johnson. “It’s just another way we are doing our part to help lead the industry forward.”

The food-safety audit was performed by Eagle Food Registrations, Inc., earning BHS the distinction of SQF 2000 Level II certification for Manufacturers and Distributors, meeting or exceeding the Safe Quality Food Institute’s rigorous criteria for product trace, regulatory, food safety and commercial quality. Recertification audits will be performed annually.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MITIGATING FOOD SAFETY RISKS IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN
Unique Chemical Company Offers Remarkable Solutions

NAMPA, Idaho, Sept. 1, 2012 – Driven by a public outcry for increased food safety, questions of mitigating safety risks have come to the fore. Waves of change are coming to the U.S. food industry; and one remarkable chemical manufacturer and distributor – BHS Specialty Chemical Products, headquartered in Nampa, Idaho – is helping to answer those questions in a variety of ingenious ways.

For one, BHS represents a small minority of manufacturers, estimated at less than 5%, who are SQF 2000 Level II Certified for food-grade ingredient manufacturing, sanitation and distribution. Considering that industry leaders including Wal-Mart now require their vendors to carry an SQF-type certification, many experts believe it will virtually become a requirement for doing business in the coming years. And when a food manufacturer sources materials from an SQF-certified company like BHS, the hurdle of passing safety audits to become certified themselves becomes much easier to clear.

“The fact is, right now our quality and overall food safety is setting the bar,” says Phil Johnson, BHS Chairman and CEO. “And as a leader in food safety, we believe that there’s simply no room for compromise.”

Far from a typical chemical supplier or distributor, the company employs a staff of experienced industry professionals including top level Chemists, Food Scientists, Microbiologists, and Service Representatives with years of food industry experience. They offer a complete line of food grade sanitation products, approved for use in food manufacturing plants. These factors have allowed BHS to become a trusted consultant for the Food Processing Industry. As a leader in technical expertise for food plant sanitation, they help mitigate the risks of biological contamination from improperly cleaned equipment, among other food safety issues.

Another factor of safety risk mitigation involves end-to-end control of production processes. In many cases, an individual department will only be concerned about the compartmentalized production segment over which they have immediate control. The gaps between, however, represent considerable risk points. Without consideration for unified safety strategies throughout, the risk of food safety failures may be increased.

A near-comprehensive list of services and capabilities, however, gives BHS a highly unique level of end-to-end control over its product. These include everything from complete manufacturing and analytical capabilities, to product manufacturing, packaging, storage, distribution and transportation, including its own trucking for dry and liquid products.

“We control the quality through the whole process,” says the company’s Business Development Manager, Douglas Schultz. “When customers get product from us, it is totally controlled. And we have everything to offer along with that – the support from the lab, the service and tech guys in the field, we have everything that they need.”

The company’s lab is a state of the art chemical research and analytical facility with microbiological capabilities. In part, it serves to support the company’s clients with testing and analytics, ensuring that chemicals match regulatory standards and customer requirements. However, the company is not satisfied with simply managing the quality and purity of its own product. BHS is pushing the edge of industry technology to meet the future needs of its customers.

Currently, BHS is developing a unique tool that will provide real-time chemical analysis with the ease of taking a photograph. Using spectroscopic data, it will instantly “read” a chemical sample, insuring that it meets standard requirements. Simultaneously, it will log that data and other pertinent information such as time and date of sample reading, product batch numbers, and more; creating a digital verification record.

This won't  just represent a novel method of chemical testing; it is a system that provides effortless digital data management and verification documentation. Ultimately, this system could greatly increase food industry traceability and accountability across the board. When it comes to mitigating risk within the supply chain, such a proposition wouldn’t only be healthy for the industry – it would be a healthy improvement for consumers everywhere.
